22 दिसंबर को गणित के मैदान के दिग्गज श्रीनिवास रामानुजन का निधन हुआ था। उनकी याद में हर साल 22 दिसंबर को राष्ट्रीय गणित दिवस मनाया जाता है।
हर साल 22 दिसंबर को देश में राष्ट्रीय गणित दिवस मनाया जाता है। यह देश के महान गणितज्ञ श्रीनिवास रामानुजन को समर्पित है जिनका जन्म 22 दिसंबर, 1887 को हुआ था। सिर्फ 32 साल की जिंदगी पाने वाले रामानुजन ने कम समय में ही कुछ ऐसा काम कर दिया, उनका नाम गणितीय इतिहास में अमर हो गया। गणित के क्षेत्र की बात की जाए तो रामानुजन गौस, यूलर और आर्किमिडीज से कम नहीं थे। उन्होंने किसी भी तरह की औपचारिक शिक्षा नहीं ली थी लेकिन ऐसी-ऐसी खोजें कीं कि बड़े-बड़े गणितज्ञ हतप्रभ रह गए।

गणित का मानवता के विकास में बड़ा महत्व है। इस महत्व के प्रति लोगों के बीच जागरुकता पैदा करना राष्ट्रीय गणित दिवस का मुख्य मकसद है। गणित को आसान बनाने और लोगों के बीच इसकी लोकप्रियता बढ़ाने के लिए कई प्रयास किए गए हैं। गणित के शिक्षकों को इसे आसानी से समझाने के लिए प्रशिक्षण भी दिया गया है।

गणित में रामानुजन का एक सबसे बड़ा योगदान हार्डी-रामानुजन नंबर है। कहानी कुछ इस तरह से है। इंग्लैंड जाने के बाद रामानुजन की हालत बहुत खराब हो गई। इसी दौरान अस्पताल जाते समय एक दिलचस्प घटना घटित हुई जो इतिहास बन गई। एक बार जब जी.एच.हार्डी अस्पताल में रामानुजन से मिलने गए ते बताया कि वह एक टैक्सीकैब से आए जिसका नंबर 1729 था। हार्डी ने कैब के नंबर को बोरिंग बताया जिस पर रामानुजन ने तुरंत कहा, 'नहीं, यह बोरिंग नहीं बल्कि बहुत दिलचस्प नंबर है। यह सबसे छोटी संख्या है जिसको दो अलग-अलग तरीके से दो घनों के योग के रूप में लिखा जा सकता है।' तब से 1729 को उनके सम्मान में हार्डी-रामानुजन नंबर कहा जाता है।

About National Mathematics Day
In India, the day December 22 has been announced as the National Mathematics Day. The Declaration was made by Dr Manmohan Singh, Former Prime Minister of India, during the inaugural function of the celebrations to mark the 125th birth commemoration of Srinivasa Ramanujan held at the Madras University Centenary Auditorium on 26 February 2012. Dr Manmohan Singh likewise reported that the year 2012 would be commended as the National Mathematics Year.
The Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887 and died on 26 April 1920. It was in acknowledgment of his commitment to science the Government of India chose to observe Ramanujan's birthday as the National Mathematics Day consistently and to celebrate 2012 as the National Mathematics Year. On 22 December 2012, the former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, paid tribute to Srinivasa Ramanujan at a function organised on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of the great mathematician Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan in Chennai. 22 December was declared as National Mathematics Day. Thus, on 22 December 2012, National Mathematics Day was celebrated across the country for the first time.
National Mathematics Day 2019: Significance
The main objective behind the celebration is to raise awareness among people about the importance of mathematics for the development of humanity. We can't ignore that several initiatives are taken to motivate, enthuse and inculcate a positive attitude towards learning mathematics among the younger generation of the country. On this day, training is also provided to the mathematics teachers and students through camps and highlights the development, production, and dissemination of teaching-learning materials (TLM) for Mathematics and research in related areas.

How is National Mathematics Day celebrated?
National Mathematics Day is celebrated in various schools, colleges, universities, and educational institutions in India. Even the International Society UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) and India had agreed to work together to spread mathematics learning and understanding. Along with this, various steps were taken to educate the students in mathematics and spread knowledge to the students and learners all over the world.
NASI (The National Academy of Science India) is the oldest science academy situated in Allahabad. To celebrate National Mathematics Day, NASI conducts a workshop in applications of Mathematics and Ramanujan. The workshop is attended by popular lecturers and experts in the field of mathematics from across the nation. Speakers at the country and world level discuss Srinivasa Ramanujan's contribution to mathematics.
The two days workshop on the topic 'History of Indian Maths before 16th Century' is also organised during 30-31 December, 2019 at the NASI headquarters at Prayagraj.
The theme of the workshop will be important talks/presentations followed by a thorough discussion on the contributions of Indian Mathematicians from the Vedic period to the medieval period which have been accepted by the whole mathematical world without controversy. Discussion in the workshop will cover below-mentioned topics:
